EXPLORE LOCAL COMMUNITY GARDENS IN DOCKLANDS

Now that it’s finally spring and as each day gets a little warmer, it’s the perfect time to give yourself a break from your computer and head outdoors for some vitamin D. Not only will time outside enhance your health and wellbeing but it’ll also increase your step count for the day. Perfect if you’re also participating in STEPtember. If the health benefits aren’t enough, time in the sun can also relieve stress, boost creativity, and improve your ability to focus on work.

We’re blessed to be surrounded by various parks and gardens in Docklands, many of which we walk past without a second glance. Did you know many of these gardens are filled with various fresh herbs and vegetables? Here’s a few I’ve spotted on my daily walks!

Harbour Esplanade - Rosemary

Rosemary grows like wildfire here and has a very distinctive smell. Make sure you don’t get them mixed up with lavender which can be similar in appearance. Our sales executive Cary Thornton often gets them mixed up, luckily, he has not made a trip to the hospital yet.

Waterfront Way (Newquay) - Dill

Dill might look like random thin weeds, however this lovely herb is a great accompaniment to most seafood dishes. Our sales executive Cherie Tomkins also tells me that it’s the perfect thing to add to pasta salads!

Urban Reforestation Community Garden (Victoria Harbour) - Thyme

Thyme is a versatile herb that works with most slow-cooked meals. By the looks of things, this herb seems to be quite popular amongst the locals here in Victoria Harbour. If you haven’t had the chance to explore this community garden be sure to check it out as there are so many little good finds here. Though please be mindful to only take what you need.

One of the newest community gardens currently under construction is the Melbourne Sky Farm. Transformed from a 2000 square metre rooftop car park into an urban farm and environmental oasis in the heart of the city. When complete, visitors will be able to tour the working farm, visit the orchard, sample honey from our rooftop hives, dine at the sustainable café, have a drink on the deck, hire unique event spaces, attend classes at the environmental education centre or enjoy the children's playground.

Many of these gardens are run by local community groups and hold regular meetings and working bees. The community gardens are an excellent opportunity to meet other like-minded Docklands residents.
