TAKE UP CYCLING TO BOOST YOUR FITNESS AND HEALTH

Whether it’s to boost your fitness, health or bank balance, or an environmental choice, taking up cycling could be one of the best decisions you ever make. Personally, I picked up cycling in one of the many lockdowns we Melbournians have gone through. With the weather getting warmer it has not just become a weekend hobby but also a great way to commute to work.

The City of Melbourne’s cycling network has over 135 km of on- and off-road routes including my favourite - an artery that runs through Docklands - Capital City Trail. Riding a bike to work shouldn’t be over complicated, it should be easy and fun. Here are three simple steps to get you riding the smart way.

Step 1 – Find your ride
You don’t need to have the latest and greatest bike. You will be surprised what you can find in a family or friend’s shed or garage. If that’s no good, you can also try second-hand or chat to your local bike shop about an easy ride. Bike Force, Cycles Galleria and Good Cycles Bike Hub in Docklands are always here to lend a helping hand.

Step 2 – Plan your ride
If you’re riding to work for the first time, you might like to find somewhere off the road like a bike path or shared trail. You can find these by searching the bike icon in Google Maps. Check out our guide on how to plan a bike route for more. But don’t get immersed in the maps—get out there and find your way. It’s a good way to find new places to ride and build confidence. Another hot tip is to chat with friends or work colleagues that live in a similar area. Maybe you could ride together!

Step 3 – Enjoy your ride
Get pedalling and have fun. It’s that simple. As the nice weather rolls in there is no better time to enjoy actively commuting to work. Take time to enjoy the simple moments – the wind in your hair, a crisp clear morning, the feeling of freedom, the green flow of traffic lights. Not only will you save time and money, but you’ll be also happier and healthier for it.
